How it started in Germany and Westerneurope
Elisabeth Vickus found an advertisment in a Cologne Germany newspaper: "Slovensky Cuvac male for sale". She called the owner, an elderly lady, and visited her. The story behind this particular dog was as follows:
An American soldier, living in Prague for years had purchased two Slovensky Cuvac in 1976. When he was reassigned to Berlin, he only had a flat with a little balcony which was not suitable for the dogs. So it was nessacary for him to give away one of his dogs. He advertised both dogs (a male and a female). A young Lady bought the male and send him to her mother in a little town close to Cologne. The dog "Dingo" was assigned to job of watching Mother and the house.
One week later, her garden was a disaster, and Dingo was exiled to the garage. Mom couldn't handle Dingo and was afraid of him, so she decided to give him away.
Elisabeth Vickus and her 8 year old son, Steven, were fascinated by this wild and uneducated dog. They bought Dingo.
It took a while until he accept his new circumstances. Dingo became lovable and he learned to love and protect his family.
Dortmund, Germany hosted the World Dog Show several months after Dingo found his family. Steve wanted to show Dingo. At the show: only two Slovensky Cuvac: "Dan z Polhino dvora" from Yugoslavia, who was a well trained male with good weight, and "Dingo z Polhino dvora" (Dingo), the skinny one. Dan won the title World Champion, and Dingo won Vice World Champion.
Dingo later was the first winner of the newly established "Club Slovensky Cuvac e.V." in Germany. The members of this Club have all had dogs from Elisabeth Vickus' kennel "Zwinger of Boehmerwald", the first kennel to breed Slovensky Cuvac in Germany and other Western European countries.
It was great fun, visiting dog shows. Over the years Dingo received a lot of titles: First in the Open Class; later in the Champion Class/Veteran Class; and also the Child and Dog Competition Class and Breeding Classes.
Dingo, and his family, were ready to breed him. The socialist Slovak government considered Slovensky Cuvac a national treasure, and would not allow export of the breed. However, a Cuvac could enter Slovakia as a family pet on vacation. So, Elisabeth and Steve presented Dingo as a female to a cooperative Veterinary in Germany to get travel papers to enter Slovakia on holiday. However, Elisabeth and Steve went without Dingo into Slovakia, and returned with a beautiful female "Britta z Marhatu", breeder "Kocera-Kular", ( helpful to find her was family Rajkaj from Bratislava- take a look to the picture),who crossed the Slovak border under Dingo's female papers.
In the age of 8 months, Elisabeth found out that Britta' s hips were a disaster with displasia-4. Elisabeth organized a very expensive operation for Britta, and she got two new hips. Then Elisabeth gave Britta as a gift to her friends Thomas and Hilja, with the understanding that Britta would never be used for breeding.
Britta was shown at several shows with best results, and the second Slovensky Cuvac Club show she was winner and was Club Champion.
A Belgian breeder owning a kennel "Kennel of the Gloaming" made contact with Elisabeth. He owned a Slovensky female and a male. The female "Milka Mytska samota" (x-ray 0-0) had had a litter of nine pups. He couldn't sell any of the pups because the breed was unknown in Western Europe. So he offered the entire litter and parent dogs to Elisabeth.
Elisabeth made the trip to Belgium... and she picked up a absolutely shy female, afraid of everything, and her skinny shy pups.
She didn' t sell them as she was only looking for good homes for them. And it worked. She held "Indra of the Gloaming" (x-ray 0-0) an old type of Slovensky Cuvac, not tall in height but a most beautiful dog with perfect points for the breed.
Both, Indra and Milka got more and more personality and Elisabeth started to show them. Fler zubrovske lesy found a good home by her girlsfriend and learned to take care of the many horses on her farm. Several times he also visited shows. (Foto)
Milka and Indra received many titles and become ICH (InterChamp) and other several Champion titles in Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Germany and other countries.
Elisabeth established her Kennel "Zwinger vom Boehmerwald", registered by FCI in Brussels.
The first litter of 12 pups starting with letter "A" out of "Milka Mytska samota" and "Dingo z Polhino dvora" was born. The pups were sent to excellent homes and at age 9 to 11 weeks, depending on their readiness to join a family.
Dr. Ida Kissova, Alena Sklenarova, Jozef Novak, the Chudareks and others become very good friends.
As a jugde of Slovensky Cuvac Ida Kissova has had known the breeders and each time, I didn' t have had enough pups, all of my friends were helpful to find a great SC.
Example: So Walter van Kerkvoorde in Belgium got his first female (photo); Theo Eiermanns got Frum z Lusky (Interchamp-photo) and later Cita. She visited us several times in Germany. We are sad, that she died with 73yrs at the 19.10.2004
A call arrived. 19 Slovensky Cuvac must go out of a kennel. The "ostfriesische Thingstaette". So Elisabeth hired a big transporter and 2 days later all dogs arrived at her farm.
Never she has seen so unsozialized dogs. Only with tranquillizer it was possible, to take care of the bad fur or to touch the dogs.
Some months later, the first dogs were ready to go to new homes. So the first changed to Petra Krivy. Her first SC. Only Perle was hold at the Zwinger vom Boehmerwald(photo), all other found the best parents.
Several dogs Elisabeth has taken over, because their owner didn' t want them longer or couldn' t hold them longer.
So Athos z Boninho dvora (Intern.Champ) arrived 5 yrs old, Amina Minoretta 4 years old, Nicole z Krupinskej 3 yrs old, Arpad od Frystake 9yrs old, and a lot more!
Elisabeth had had a lot of contact to breeder in Sweden-Norway-Suomi. So Riita Sisko Wirkalla owned a female and wanted to breed one litter more. She was coming by ferry to Travemuende to take over Arpad. He mated only one time more. Birth of one male was the result. A puppy, getting famous - winner of the Worldchampiontitle.

In the early 80' s Paul Wilkes from Mass./USA contacted me. He wanted to breed his SC-female "Germina z Farmy Zbiroh", but didn' t have had a male for her. So he asked for sending sperms of my "Grant z Kmochova rodiste".
I tried everything, but it was not allowed at this time, to send sperms (cold in a gasliquid) to USA.
So I called him, to ask: shall I come personal with my Grant. So he can mate Germina directly. He want to discuss this first with his wife Nancy, but finally it was the 12th day of heat, he agreed. Directly I booked a flight to NY, where Paul was waiting. Some hours drive to his farm. Grant jumped out of the car, even he was been more than 8 hours prisoner in his box- and it took 4 minutes and he was hanging. What a good job.

Paul Wilkes bought Germina z Farmy Zbiroh ( a gigantic female)from Dr. J. Schoen. One of the dogs , he owned at that time. He was looking for a good home. He was feeling to old. With his Czech heritage, he was all his life in love with SC. So he founded a club for this rare breed in 1982.
Paul Wilkes, from Slovakian heritage was totally in love with these dogs.
All pups of Germina where healthy and found soon a good home. One male, looking like Germina was taken over by his nephew "Phil Ford". Paul hold "Betka", named to Elisabeth.
The first litter of Betka was beautiful. In the meanwhile Elisabeth brought 2 males (z Kmochova rodiste and vom Boehmerwald) to Mass., so breeding was no longer a problem.
At the first Kennelmeeting Elisabeth flew in to be a part of the part.
There she met the nicest people. Nancy and Ed Smith from Mass. bought Anuska. Later they wanted too to breed. They founded the kennel of White Star, Phil Ford's wife was at the kennelmeeting too. Elisabeth visited some weeks before the International Dog Show in Vienna/Austria. Ingrid Mikulasova was helpful, to find a beautiful femalepup, which Elisabeth brought with to Wilkes farm for her. Ali Anta was the first female at the kennel of Sandy Acres and had had great babies.
Nancy Smith bought in 1993 the 1. Slovensky Cuvac Dog club of Amerika 1982 from J. Schorn, and started to be buisy arround this breed.
Phil +and Vicky Ford, Nancy and Ed Smith and Elisabeth met several times (Florida, Washington etc) to show their dogs at ARBA-shows.
Always most successful. And always we met people, they also owned a SC. So the club of SC-lover was fast growing.
Dr. Edward Tulea was one of the importent contacts. Cuvac owner and breeder.
At the moment (April 2012)their are 71 Cuvac in USA and Canada.

In 2008 a litter with 2 pups at Kennel Tranquil Hill. Joel Sherrif is owner. He has had 3 SC, but she beautiful female out of the "Kennel White Star" died 2009.

After 10 years of inactivity in breeding Elisabeth Pisula started again in 2008 to bring the club back to life.
The studbook needed a lot of work. Registering the Slovensky Cuvac from 1996 till today, even they wasn't longer alive.
(totally 154 SC registered).
After loosing several SC in 2008 to 2012 we know about 71 Slovensky Cuvac alive in USA (April 2012)
